2009 - 60 Years of Commonwealth | Commemorative Coin

The 5th commemorative coin for the year 2009 was issued to celebrate '60 Years of the Commonwealth'.

The Commonwealth of Nations, commonly referred to as the Commonwealth and formerly known as the British Commonwealth, stands as an intergovernmental organization comprising fifty-four independent member states. With only two exceptions (Mozambique and Rwanda), all member states were previously part of the British Empire, contributing to the organization's historical development.

These member states engage in collaborative efforts guided by a set of common values and objectives outlined in the Singapore Declaration. Embracing principles such as the promotion of democracy, human rights, good governance, the rule of law, individual liberty, egalitarianism, free trade, multilateralism, and world peace, the Commonwealth serves as a platform for shared aspirations. Notably, it is not a political union but rather an intergovernmental organization that recognizes countries with diverse social, political, and economic backgrounds as equals.

Operational activities are coordinated through the permanent Commonwealth Secretariat, led by the Secretary-General, and biennial meetings gather Commonwealth Heads of Government. The symbolic figurehead representing their collective association is the Head of the Commonwealth, a ceremonial role currently held by Queen Elizabeth II. Furthermore, Queen Elizabeth II serves independently as the monarch of sixteen Commonwealth members, collectively known as the "Commonwealth realms."

In 2009, the Commonwealth celebrated its 60th anniversary, commemorating six decades of collaboration among member nations. Established on April 26, 1949, the Commonwealth of Nations reflects historical ties, shared values, and common principles, fostering mutual understanding and cooperation on a global scale. This milestone offered an opportunity for introspection, recognizing the organization's achievements and reaffirming its commitment to nurturing goodwill and development across its diverse member states.
