The British East India Company started a uniform currency which began in 1835. The monetary system was introduced with Annas to Mohurs.

The Crown directly appointed the governor-general, or viceroy in India. The "Regal Style" first appeared on Indian coins in 1862, when the new designs showed Queen Victoria with a crown on her head (as opposed to the unadorned head of earlier years). Later, the Company itself was formally dissolved by Act of Parliament in 1874. Thus began the British Raj, direct imperial rule of India by the British state.

The type set gives collectors an opportunity to show a wide range of coins over several regnal periods and over an interesting group of denominations. The really tough coin in these set is the gold Mohur, which has advanced rapidly in price in recent years.
