RBI Revives Polymer Banknote Plan After More Than a Decade

The Reserve Bank of India is once again considering the introduction of polymer banknotes, reviving a proposal that was first explored more than a decade ago, according to a report by Business Standard. The move comes at a time when the cost of printing currency notes is rising sharply and billions of soiled notes continue to be withdrawn from circulation every year. The RBI is expected to announce a pilot project in the near future, with discussions reportedly taking place during the central bank’s last two board meetings held in Patna and Mumbai. Lower denomination notes such as the ₹10 and ₹20 are likely to be selected for the initial trial because they deteriorate quickly due to frequent circulation. Polymer banknotes are made from a synthetic plastic substrate instead of the traditional cotton-based paper used in Indian currency. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on May 26, 2026, confirming this coin. It specialises in dredging operations that involve the removal of silt and sediments from ports, harbours, and shipping channels to maintain navigable depths. The India Government Mint, Hyderabad, has opened the bookings for the ₹60  commemorative coin issued to mark the 60 Years of HLL Lifecare Limited . The bookings are open from May 19, 2026, and it is subject to limited availability. Earlier on May 18, 2026, the  Union Health Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava, released the ₹60 commemorative coin during the valedictory function held at the HLL Peroorkada Factory in Thiruvananthapuram, marking the organisation’s 60 years of dedicated service towards advancing public health in India. The ₹60 coin has currently been issued in a Proof Set with Booklet, priced at ₹16,140. It remains to be seen whether the Hyderabad Mint will also release UNC Sets in similar packaging, and whether the coin will additionally be made available in Cardboard (Kappa) Box packaging for both Proof and UNC Sets. The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Harsh Sanghavi, along with other ministers and distinguished dignitaries, were also present on the occasion.
