India achieved independence on 15^th August 1947, during the period of transition India retained the monetary system of the earlier period of British Raj until the new Anna Series was introduced on 15^th August 1950. In this coinage, the bust of the Britain King was replaced with National emblem which is an adaptation of the Lion Capital of Ashoka Sarnath. The monetary system of Anna series was 4 Pice = 1 Anna, 16 Anna = 1 Rupee.

In 1955, the Indian Coinage Act was amended and the decimal series were brought to existence with the metric system making the monetary system as 100 Paise = 1 Rupee.
