Govt Clears RBI Pilot for ₹10 and ₹20 Polymer Banknotes

Image
The Government of India has taken the first formal step towards the possible introduction of polymer banknotes after approving the Reserve Bank of India's proposal to conduct field trials of polymer-based ₹10 and ₹20 notes. The Ministry of Finance has authorised the RBI to print one billion pieces (one hundred crore) each of the ₹10 and ₹20 polymer banknotes for pilot circulation across selected regions of the country. The approval was confirmed by the Minister of State for Finance, Shri Pankaj Chaudhary, in a written reply to questions raised in the Lok Sabha. According to the government, the RBI intends to introduce the polymer banknotes on a trial basis to evaluate their performance under India's diverse climatic and circulation conditions. The pilot project will assess factors such as durability, resistance to wear and tear, public acceptance, machine compatibility, and overall cost-effectiveness before any decision is taken on a wider rollout. The RBI has maintained that...

The Myth of India's 2019 "Raindrop Series" Coins

Image
Among Indian coin collectors, the 2019 definitive coin series is widely referred to as the "Raindrop Series" or "Raindrop Coins."  The nickname has become so common that it frequently appears in coin trading groups, online marketplaces, catalogues, and social media discussions. However, despite its popularity, the term is technically incorrect and finds no support in any official Government document. The coins were never intended to depict raindrops; rather, they were designed to showcase India's agricultural strength through the depiction of grains. The 2019 definitive series marked one of the most significant redesigns of India's circulating coinage in recent years, comprising the ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10, and ₹20 denominations. Besides introducing the country's first circulating dodecagonal bi-metallic ₹20 coin, the series was designed to be more accessible to visually impaired individuals through distinct sizes, weights, and edge patterns, making each denom...

Could G+D Be a Player in India's Polymer Banknote Rollout?

Image
The possibility of India introducing polymer banknotes has once again entered public discussion following recent remarks by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shri Sanjay Malhotra and the announcement of a major investment by German security technology company Giesecke+Devrient (G+D). While no official decision has yet been taken regarding polymer currency , the convergence of these developments has raised questions about whether G+D could emerge as an important partner in India's future currency transformation. India's economy is currently being viewed with considerable optimism by policymakers and global investors alike. RBI Governor Shri Sanjay Malhotra recently stated that the Indian economy presents a picture of strength, stability, and opportunity, supported by strong fundamentals, growth-oriented policies, and a forward-looking economic strategy. He also emphasized that India remains an attractive destination for domestic and international investment and that the coun...

RBI Revives Polymer Banknote Plan After More Than a Decade

Image
The Reserve Bank of India is once again considering the introduction of polymer banknotes, reviving a proposal that was first explored more than a decade ago, according to a report by Business Standard. The move comes at a time when the cost of printing currency notes is rising sharply and billions of soiled notes continue to be withdrawn from circulation every year. The RBI is expected to announce a pilot project in the near future, with discussions reportedly taking place during the central bank’s last two board meetings held in Patna and Mumbai. Lower denomination notes such as the ₹10 and ₹20 are likely to be selected for the initial trial because they deteriorate quickly due to frequent circulation. Polymer banknotes are made from a synthetic plastic substrate instead of the traditional cotton-based paper used in Indian currency. These notes are generally more durable, resistant to moisture and dirt, and can last significantly longer in circulation. Polymer notes also allow the i...

Fact Check: ₹500 Banknote Featuring Lord Ram’s Portrait

Image
As the grand consecration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya approaches, an image of a ₹500 banknote has emerged on the internet, depicting Lord Ram. Widespread claims suggest that the image of Lord Ram has replaced Mahatma Gandhi on the banknote. It is important to note that as of now, neither the Central Government nor the Reserve Bank of India has made an official announcement regarding the issuance of new 500 rupee notes featuring images of Lord Ram and the Ram temple. This supposed commemoration is in connection with the consecration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22, 2024. These banknotes are manipulated creations intended to deceive individuals by exploiting the sentiments associated with the Ayodhya Ram Mandir. The most recent ₹500 banknotes were introduced in 2016, concurrently with the issuance of ₹2000 banknotes, followed by denominations of ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, and ₹200. However, as part of the "Clean Note Policy," the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decid...

This move comes after almost seven years of its introduction in November 2016 to remonetize the economy, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's sudden decision to invalidate 1,000 and 500 rupee notes as legal tender overnight, as part of an anti-corruption initiative. Despite the majority of the 3.56 trillion rupees being deposited, approximately 7 percent of these notes were still in circulation as of September 1, 2023. Th...
