In its withdrawal notice, the RBI explained that the ₹2000 banknotes had fulfilled their intended purpose and were no longer in widespread circulation. The central bank also referenced its 'clean note policy,' which mandates the replacement of worn or soiled notes within a period of four to five years. RBI to Withdraw ₹2,000 Banknotes from Circulation

The Reserve Bank of India has decided to withdraw ₹2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation and asked all to exchange them by September 30, 2023. The ₹2,000 notes, however, will continue to be legal tender. The ₹2000 denomination banknote was introduced in November 2016 under Section 24(1) of RBI Act, 1934, primarily to meet the currency requirement of the economy in an expeditious manner after the withdrawal of legal tender status of all ₹500 and ₹1000 banknotes in circulation at that time. The objective of introducing ₹2000 banknotes was met once banknotes in other denominations became available in adequate quantities. Therefore, printing of ₹2000 banknotes was stopped in 2018-19. Is the Rs 2000 Banknote Being Phased Out or Banned?

Recently, there have been reports and rumors circulating about the potential demonetization or banning of the Rs 2,000 high-denomination banknote. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has ceased printing Rs 2,000 banknotes and is gradually withdrawing them from circulation. Consequently, once deposited into banks, the Rs 2,000 banknotes are expected to have limited circulation, particularly in ATMs. Although the highest-value currency remains legal tender, it is anticipated to be phased out gradually. Banks are in the process of re-calibrating ATMs to substitute high-value Rs 2,000 notes with Rs 500 notes. While there is no official confirmation from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or other authorities, this adjustment is speculated to be part of the central bank's strategy to monitor the total amount of high-value currency in circulation.
