RBI Revives Polymer Banknote Plan After More Than a Decade

The Reserve Bank of India is once again considering the introduction of polymer banknotes, reviving a proposal that was first explored more than a decade ago, according to a report by Business Standard. The move comes at a time when the cost of printing currency notes is rising sharply and billions of soiled notes continue to be withdrawn from circulation every year. The RBI is expected to announce a pilot project in the near future, with discussions reportedly taking place during the central bank’s last two board meetings held in Patna and Mumbai. Lower denomination notes such as the ₹10 and ₹20 are likely to be selected for the initial trial because they deteriorate quickly due to frequent circulation. Mumbai Mint Begins Bookings for PMSMA Coin Sets

The India Government Mint, Mumbai has started the bookings for the ₹75  commemorative coin issued to mark the 10 Years of Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) . The bookings are open from today, June 9, 2026, and are subject to limited availability. Earlier today, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, released the commemorative coin and a postage stamp to mark the occasion in New Delhi. The ₹75 coin is currently available in a Proof Set presented in a booklet package, priced at ₹1,700.  This ₹75 coin marks the fifth nickel silver commemorative coin issued and the first-ever ₹75 denomination struck in this base-metal composition. It should be noted that, despite its name, nickel silver contains no actual silver and is classified as a base metal.  The decision by the India Government Mint to issue the coin in nickel silver may have been influenced by the recent volatility in silver prices over the past several months. Hyderabad Mint Opens Bookings for HLL Lifecare Limited Coin Sets

The India Government Mint, Hyderabad, has opened the bookings for the ₹60  commemorative coin issued to mark the 60 Years of HLL Lifecare Limited . The bookings are open from May 19, 2026, and it is subject to limited availability. Earlier on May 18, 2026, the  Union Health Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava, released the ₹60 commemorative coin during the valedictory function held at the HLL Peroorkada Factory in Thiruvananthapuram, marking the organisation’s 60 years of dedicated service towards advancing public health in India. The ₹60 coin has currently been issued in a Proof Set with Booklet, priced at ₹16,140. It remains to be seen whether the Hyderabad Mint will also release UNC Sets in similar packaging, and whether the coin will additionally be made available in Cardboard (Kappa) Box packaging for both Proof and UNC Sets.
