2006 - Jagath Guru Sree Narayana Gurudev | Commemorative Coin

In the year 2006, the commemorative coin was released on occasion of 150th Birth Anniversary of Jagath Guru Sree Narayana Gurudev.

Sri Nārāyana Guru (1855–1928) was a revered Hindu saint and social reformer in India. Born into an Ezhava family during a period marked by social injustices against backward communities like the Ezhavas in caste-ridden Kerala, Gurudevan, as he was affectionately known, spearheaded a reform movement in the state. He vehemently opposed casteism, championed values of spiritual freedom, and advocated for social equality, ultimately transforming Kerala society. His followers regard him as a prophet.

Nārāyana Guru is celebrated for his profound Vedic knowledge, poetic prowess, openness to diverse perspectives, non-violent philosophy, and unwavering commitment to rectify social wrongs. He played a pivotal role in establishing spiritual foundations for social reform in Kerala and stands out as one of India's most successful reformers addressing caste issues. The Guru emphasized the self-driven spiritual and social upliftment of the downtrodden, advocating for the creation of temples and educational institutions.

Hailing from the birthplace of Adi Shankara, Sree Nārāyana Guru was a significant advocate and reassessor of Advaita Vedanta. His philosophy, rooted in Advaitic and non-dual wisdom, extended these principles into practical avenues for self-realization through spiritual education, compassion, and peaceful coexistence, all while promoting social equality and universal brotherhood. Nārāyana Guru's futuristic worldview focused on shaping a world order based on his philosophical connotations, characterized by transcendental aesthetics and logic grounded in knowledge and pure reason.

In September 1928, Guru fell seriously ill and remained bedridden, drawing devotees in large numbers who sought a glimpse of the revered figure.
