2005 - 150 Years of Telecommunications | Commemorative Coin
The first commemorative coin of 2005 was released to celebrate the 150 years of Telecommunications.
Telecommunications in India has a long and influential history that has played a vital role in shaping the nation’s progress. Its origins can be traced back to the mid-19th century, when the British established the first telegraph line between Kolkata and Diamond Harbour in 1851. This breakthrough marked the beginning of structured communication networks in India and laid the foundation for the country’s future technological advancements.
The telegraph system expanded rapidly, connecting major cities and administrative centres, enabling faster communication across vast distances. By the late 19th century, India had one of the world’s largest telegraph networks, which became crucial during governance, trade, and military operations. The introduction of the telephone in the early 20th century further revolutionised communication. Manual exchanges gradually gave way to automated systems, allowing clearer and more efficient connectivity.
After independence, India focused on developing a modern telecommunications infrastructure. The creation of the Posts and Telegraphs Department, and later the establishment of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), helped expand landline networks to rural and urban regions alike. The 1980s and 1990s brought a technological shift with the advent of digital exchanges, optical fibre networks, and satellite communication. The telecom revolution accelerated in the late 1990s with the entry of private players, paving the way for mobile telephony, which soon became the most accessible mode of communication for millions.
By the early 2000s, India had entered a new era of connectivity marked by rapid growth in mobile subscribers, improved infrastructure, and greater affordability. In recognition of the sector’s journey, the Government of India celebrated 150 Years of Telecommunications in 2004, marking a milestone that honoured the nation’s evolution from the first telegraph line to a vast and modern communication network powering its socio-economic development.
