1994 - Water for Life | Commemorative Coin

The 2nd commemorative coin of 1994 was issued on the theme ‘Water For Life’ to mark World Food Day.

The year 1994 marked a special focus on the theme “Water for Life” under the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in observance of World Food Day. Recognizing water as a critical resource for agriculture, food production, and overall human survival, the initiative highlighted the importance of sustainable water management and conservation. Water is not only essential for crop irrigation and livestock but also for maintaining ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and ensuring food security for growing populations.

“Water for Life” emphasized the need to address the challenges of water scarcity, inefficient usage, and pollution, which threaten the sustainability of agricultural practices and the well-being of communities worldwide. The campaign encouraged governments, farmers, and organizations to adopt efficient irrigation techniques, watershed management, rainwater harvesting, and the protection of rivers, lakes, and groundwater resources. Public awareness programs and educational campaigns stressed the importance of responsible water use at individual, community, and national levels, linking water conservation directly to health, nutrition, and socio-economic development.

By focusing on water as a vital component of life and food security, the 1994 initiative reinforced the interdependence of natural resources and human development. It underscored that sustainable water management is essential not only for agricultural productivity but also for combating hunger, supporting livelihoods, and preserving the environment for future generations.

The “Water for Life” campaign of 1994 served as a global reminder that water is a finite and invaluable resource, requiring coordinated efforts across sectors and societies to ensure equitable access, efficient use, and long-term sustainability. It reinforced the FAO’s commitment to promoting awareness and action on water conservation as a fundamental element of achieving food security and fostering human well-being.
