President Releases ₹100 Coin at HBTU Kanpur Centenary Celebrations
The Hon'ble President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, released the ₹100 commemorative coin and a postage stamp to mark the centenary celebrations of Harcourt Butler Technical University in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on November 25, 2021.
The Hon’ble Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Smt. Anandiben Patel, along with other dignitaries, was also present on the occasion.
Addressing the centenary celebrations, the President said that Harcourt Butler Technical University has long been recognized for its significant contributions in the fields of oil, paint, plastic and food technologies. He noted that the illustrious history of this institution is closely intertwined with the industrial growth that has shaped India since the early 20th century. The expertise, technology and skilled human resources nurtured by HBTU have played a pivotal role in establishing Kanpur’s reputation as the “Manchester of the East,” the “Leather City of the World,” and an important industrial hub.
The President observed that while HBTU is celebrating its 100th year, the nation is commemorating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to mark 75 years of independence. When India celebrates the centenary of its independence in 2047, HBTU will complete 125 years of its establishment. Referring to the university’s current position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), placed at 166th, he emphasized that all stakeholders must strive with determination to ensure that by 2047, HBTU is counted among the top 25 institutions of the country. He expressed confidence that the collective efforts of the university community would raise both HBTU and the nation to new heights.
Highlighting the indispensable role of innovation and technological advancement, the President noted that only those nations that prioritize innovation and modern technology continue to lead globally. India has made increasing strides in science and technology, yet much remains to be achieved. In this context, he underlined the responsibility of institutions like HBTU to cultivate a strong spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship among students. He stressed that students should be nurtured in an environment that enables them to become job creators rather than job seekers, thereby contributing meaningfully to national development.
Drawing attention to the low participation of girls in technical education, the President remarked that he has observed exceptional performance by girl students at various convocations across the country. However, their representation in technical fields continues to be unsatisfactory. He emphasized the urgent need to encourage greater participation of girls in technical education, stating that such efforts would significantly strengthen the cause of women empowerment.
This release marks the third commemorative coin for the year 2021, signifying the fourth release featuring a University theme.
