Will India Introduce a 50 Rupees Circulation Coin Soon?
A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court, urging the Central Government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to establish a policy for the issuance of ₹50 coins. The aim is to ensure equal opportunities and ease of doing business for visually-challenged citizens in the country.
The application was submitted within the context of an ongoing petition by advocate Mr. Rohit Dandriyal, who originally sought directives for the withdrawal of new ₹50 currency notes. The difficulty faced by visually-challenged individuals in using these notes due to their size and tactile marks was cited as the primary concern.
The plea highlighted the efforts of the respondents in implementing various schemes for the visually-challenged, including the issuance of visually-friendly coins in denominations such as ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10, and ₹20. While the currency notes of denominations ₹1, ₹5, ₹10, ₹20, ₹100, ₹200, ₹500, and ₹2,000 are designed to be visually-challenged friendly, the ₹50 banknote poses challenges as it is visually indistinguishable from the ₹100 and ₹500 notes, and there is currently no coin available for this denomination.
The petition also emphasized the importance of tactile features in different shapes for various denominations, providing examples such as a vertical rectangle for ₹20, a square for ₹50 (in older notes), a triangle and circle for ₹100, and a diamond for the ₹1,000 currency, which is no longer legal tender.
A Bench consisting of Chief Justice D. N. Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh has scheduled the application for a hearing on February 25, 2022.
