New Commemorative Coin: Raja Ram Mohan Roy
The Government of India will be issuing a Rs 250 commemorative coin to celebrate the 250th Birth Centenary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy. The Ministry of Finance has issued the gazette notification on 4th July 2022 confirming the same.
Ram Mohan Roy (22 May 1772 – 27 September 1833) was an Indian reformer who was one of the founders of the Brahmo Sabha in 1828, the precursor of the Brahmo Samaj, a social-religious reform movement in the Indian subcontinent. He was given the title of Raja by Akbar II, the Mughal emperor. His influence was apparent in the fields of politics, public administration, education and religion. He was known for his efforts to abolish the practices of sati and child marriage. Roy is considered to be the "Father of the Bengal Renaissance" by many historians.
The metal composition of the coin will be Quaternary Alloy (50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel and 5% Zinc). The weight of the coin will be 35 grams and 44 mm in diameter with 200 serrations at the edge. The description of the coin is as below.
Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked with the word “भारत” and "INDIA" at right and left periphery of the coin with Rupee Symbol "₹” and denomination value “250” in International Numerals below the Ashoka Lion Capital.
Reverse: This face of coin shall bear the image of the Raja Ram Mohan Roy in the center of the coin. The inscription “राजा राम मोहन राय की 250वीं जयंती” shall be written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery and the inscription “250th Birth Anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy” in English on the lower periphery of the coin. The year “1772” in international numeral beside left side and the year “2022” beside right side of the image of Raja Ram Mohan Roy shall be written.
The commemorative coin will be issued mostly in September 2022 or May 2023. Earlier in January 2022, this blog has posted the possibility of the commemorative coin.
