New Commemorative Coin: 150th Birth Anniversary of Sri Aurobindo

The Government of India will be issuing a Rs 150 commemorative coin on occasion of 150th Birth Anniversary of Sri Aurobindo. The Ministry of Finance has issued the gazette notification confirming the same on 9th December 2022.

Sri Aurobindo was an Indian philosopher, yogi, maharishi, poet, and Indian nationalist. He was also a journalist, editing newspapers such as Vande Mataram. Earlier in 1998, commemorative coins in denominations of Rs 100, Rs 50, Rs 10 and Rs 2 was issued on occasion of 125th Birth Anniversary of Sri Aurobindo.

The metal composition of the coin will be Quaternary Alloy (50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel and 5% Zinc). The weight of the coin will be 35 grams and 44 mm in diameter with 200 serrations at the edge. The description of the coin is as below. 

Obverse:  The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed  below, flanked  with the  word “भारत” and  "INDIA" at right and left periphery of the coin with Rupee Symbol "₹” and denomination  value “150” in International Numerals below the Ashoka Lion Capital.

Reverse: This face of coin shall bear the portrait of Sri Aurobindo in the center of the coin. The  inscription  "श्री अरविन्द की 150 वीं जयंती" shall be written in Devanagari script.on the upper periphery of the coin and the inscription "150th Birth Anniversary of Sri Aurobindo" in English is depicted on the lower periphery of the coin. The year “1872” and “1950” in international numeral shall be written on the left and right side of the portrait of Sri Aurobindo respectively. The year `2022` in International numeral shall be flanked at the bottom of the portrait.

The commemorative coin is scheduled to release this month. In January 2022, the possible potential theme was posted on this blog.
