New Commemorative Coin: 50 Years of Project Tiger

The Government of India will be issuing a Rs 50 commemorative coin on occasion of 50 years of Project Tiger. The Ministry of Finance has issued the gazette notification today confirming the same.

Project Tiger, started in 1973, is a conservation effort initiated by the central government that aims to provide a sustainable population of tigers in their native habitats. 

The metal composition of the coin will be Quaternary Alloy (50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel and 5% Zinc). The weight of the coin will be 35 grams and 44 mm in diameter with 200 serrations at the edge. The description of the coin is as below.

Obverse:  The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed  below, flanked  with the  word “भारत” and  "INDIA" at right and left periphery of the coin with Rupee Symbol "₹” and denomination  value “50” in International Numerals below the Ashoka Lion Capital.

Reverse: This face of coin shall bear image of Tiger in the center of the coin. The text “1973 - 2023” is inscripted on the right side periphery of the coin. The inscription “व्याघ्र परियोजना के 50 वर्ष” in Devanagari script shall be written on the upper periphery and the inscription “50 YEARS OF PROJECT TIGER” in English is depicted on the lower periphery of the coin.

April 1, 2023 will mark the fiftieth year of Project Tiger, launched by the then Prime Minister, Smt Indira Gandhi, at the Jim Corbett National Park in 1973. Its avowed aim to secure the big cat as a species from the threat of extinction.
