Defence Secretary Releases ₹250 Coin on Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd

The Defence Secretary of India, Shri Giridhar Aramane, released the ₹250 commemorative coin to celebrate the '250 Years of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd', today, on May 14, 2024 at Mumbai.

Shri Sanjeev Singhal, CMD of MDL, Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh, Flag Officer Commanding–in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, and Shri Rajiv Jalota, Chairman of Mumbai Port Trust, were also present at the event.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), formerly known as Mazagon Dock Limited, is a prominent shipyard located in Mazagaon, Mumbai. Specializing in the construction of warships and submarines for the Indian Navy, MDL also fabricates offshore platforms and provides support vessels for offshore oil drilling. 

Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane highlighted the global capacity crunch in the defence industry, stressing a sustained demand for defence utilities. He emphasized the imperative for Indian shipbuilders to enhance capacity to meet security needs, citing heightened demand for ammunition and land platforms due to the Russia-Ukraine war and emerging technologies like asymmetric warfare. Aramane underlined the necessity to replenish inventories and refurbish equipment damaged in conflicts.

Reflecting on history, Aramane underscored the consistent need for shipyard orders, particularly emphasizing the pivotal role of MDL. He highlighted MDL's involvement in forming a consortium with the private sector to cater to navy and commercial needs.
