New Commemorative Coin: SBI Mumbai Main Branch Building Centenary Year

The Government of India will issue a commemorative coin with a denomination of ₹100 on the occasion of State Bank of India, Mumbai Main Branch Building Centenary Year. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on September 11, 2024, confirming this coin.

The State Bank of India (SBI) Mumbai Main Branch building, located in the bustling financial district of Mumbai, stands as an architectural landmark with a rich history dating back to 1924. As the central hub of India's largest public sector bank, this iconic building has witnessed the evolution of India’s banking sector over the past century. Designed in a colonial architectural style, the SBI Mumbai Main Branch reflects the grandeur and significance of its time, embodying both tradition and modernity.

The metal composition of the ₹100 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “100” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: The face of the coin will bear the image of SBI Mumbai Main Branch Building in the centre of the coin. The year 1924 and 2024 in the international numerals shall be inscribed on left and right side of the image of SBI Mumbai main branch building respectively. The text “एस बी आई मुंबई मुख्य शाखा भवन शताब्दी वर्ष” shall be inscribed in Devanagari script on the upper periphery of the coin and “Centenary Year SBI Mumbai Main Branch Building” shall be inscribed in English on the lower periphery of the coin.

This ₹100 coin marks the second time a commemorative coin has been issued for the State Bank of India, following the ₹100 and ₹5 coins released to celebrate its Bicentenary Year in 2006. While the State Bank of India's significance is undeniable, the repetition of themes in coin issuance may not be well-received by collectors and numismatists, who often seek unique and diverse themes to enrich their collections. The possibility and upcoming coins page have been updated for your reference.
