2019 - Grains/Agriculture Series | Definitive Coin

The year 2019 marked the introduction of a new series of visually impaired-friendly definitive coins. The series also introduced India's first ₹20 bi-metallic circulating coin, representing a significant milestone in the evolution of the country's circulating coinage.

The new series of visually impaired-friendly circulation coins was unveiled at a function held at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, New Delhi, where visually impaired children were specially invited to witness the launch. The coins were designed with distinct sizes, weights, shapes, and tactile features to enable easier identification by persons with visual impairments, making India's circulating coinage more accessible and user-friendly.

The ₹10 and ₹20 denominations were issued as bi-metallic coins. Notably, the ₹20 coin became India's first-ever circulating coin of that denomination and was introduced in a distinctive dodecagonal (12-sided) shape. Although the series was launched in 2019, the ₹20 denomination entered circulation only in 2020. However, while the ₹1 coin of this series is believed to have been minted in substantial quantities, it has never entered general circulation, making it one of the most unusual issues in India's modern definitive coinage.

This definitive series entered circulation in phases over the following years through the banking system managed by the Reserve Bank of India. The staggered release meant that different denominations became available to the public at different times, and the series continues to form part of India's current circulating coinage.

India Initiates Global Procurement for Polymer Banknote Substrate

India has taken another significant step towards the possible introduction of polymer banknotes with Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited (BRBNMPL) issuing a Global Expression of Interest (EOI) on July, 17 2026 for the manufacture and supply of opacified polymer substrate sheets with advanced security features. The initiative is aimed at identifying experienced domestic and international manufacturers capable of producing high-security polymer substrates suitable for printing Indian banknotes. While this does not confirm the immediate introduction of polymer currency, it demonstrates that the groundwork for its adoption is now progressing in a structured manner. Mumbai Mint Opens Bookings for Rajendra Chola I Coin Sets

The India Government Mint, Mumbai, has opened the bookings for the ₹1000 commemorative coin issued to mark the 1000 Years of Naval Expedition of Emperor Rajendra Chola I . The bookings are open from August 26, 2025, and it is subject to limited availability. Earlier, on July 27, 2025, the Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, unveiled a ₹1000 commemorative coin during his visit to Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Ariyalur district. The event was attended by the Hon'ble Governor of Tamil Nadu, Shri R.N. Ravi, the Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. L.
