1995 - 50th Anniversary of United Nations | Commemorative Coin

The second commemorative coin for the year 1995 was released to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of United Nations.

The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization with the fundamental purposes of maintaining international peace and security, fostering friendly relations among nations, promoting international cooperation, and serving as a hub for harmonizing global actions. As the largest and most widely recognized international organization, the UN is headquartered on international territory in New York City. It also maintains key offices in Geneva, Nairobi, Vienna, and The Hague, which houses the International Court of Justice.

Established in the aftermath of World War II, the UN aimed to prevent future conflicts and succeeded the League of Nations, which had proven ineffective. The journey began on 25 April 1945, as representatives from 50 governments gathered in San Francisco to draft the UN Charter. This foundational document was adopted on 25 June 1945 and became operational on 24 October 1945, marking the commencement of UN operations. Guided by the Charter, the organization's objectives encompass maintaining international peace and security, safeguarding human rights, providing humanitarian assistance, advancing sustainable development, and upholding international law.

At its inception, the UN comprised 51 member states. With the inclusion of South Sudan in 2011, the membership expanded to 193, encompassing nearly all sovereign states globally. Over the years, the UN, its officers, and affiliated agencies have been recipients of numerous Nobel Peace Prizes. However, assessments of its effectiveness vary, with some viewing it as a crucial force for peace and human development, while others criticize it as ineffective, biased, or plagued by corruption. The UN remains a complex entity, continually adapting to address global challenges and aspirations for a more harmonious and just world.
