2019 - Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Mumbai, issued a 5-gram Gold Medallion and a 40-gram Silver Medallion to mark the 550th Prakash Purab celebrations of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. A ₹550 commemorative coin was also issued on the same occasion by the India Government Mint, Kolkata.

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji (1469–1539), the founder and first Guru of Sikhism, was a spiritual teacher, philosopher, and reformer whose message emphasised the oneness of God, equality, compassion, and selfless service. Born at Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi, now Nankana Sahib in Pakistan, Guru Nanak Dev Ji challenged social divisions, religious intolerance, and empty rituals, advocating a life based on truthful living, honest work, sharing with others, and devotion to the Divine.

His teachings, expressed through profound hymns, form the foundation of Sikh spiritual thought and are preserved in the Guru Granth Sahib. The principles of Naam Japna (remembering the Divine), Kirat Karni (earning through honest work), and Vand Chakna (sharing with others) continue to guide millions of people around the world.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji undertook extensive journeys, known as Udasis, travelling across different regions to share his message of universal brotherhood and spiritual harmony. His teachings transcended distinctions of caste, creed, gender, and social status, presenting a vision of humanity united through devotion, equality, and service.

He established the institution of Langar, a community kitchen where people from all backgrounds could sit together and share a meal, reflecting his profound belief in equality and social harmony. His simple yet powerful teachings continue to inspire communities worldwide to pursue a life of truth, humility, service, and compassion. He also established Kartarpur, where he spent his final years and developed a community centred on spiritual devotion, honest work, and sharing.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji's teachings emphasised that spiritual life should be reflected through righteous conduct and service to humanity. His message of Ik Onkar, the oneness of the Divine, remains at the heart of Sikh philosophy and continues to resonate far beyond religious boundaries.

His legacy continues to inspire people across generations, and Guru Nanak Gurpurab, marking his birth anniversary, is observed with prayers, kirtan, processions, and community service. Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji remains a timeless symbol of peace, equality, humility, and universal compassion.
