2022 - Panchatantra: The Foolish Lion and The Clever Rabbit | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, issued its first coloured souvenir token as part of the Panchatantra series, featuring the famous tale “The Foolish Lion and the Clever Rabbit,” to mark the 17th SPMCIL Foundation Day.

The Panchatantra is one of India’s most celebrated collections of ancient animal fables, traditionally attributed to Vishnu Sharma. Composed in Sanskrit, the Panchatantra uses stories involving animals, kings, ministers, and ordinary people to impart practical wisdom and moral values. The tales are known for their engaging narratives and lessons on intelligence, friendship, leadership, strategy, and the consequences of poor judgement.

The word Panchatantra means “Five Treatises” or “Five Principles,” referring to the traditional five sections into which the work is divided. The stories were originally intended to teach the principles of wise conduct and statecraft, particularly to young princes. Over centuries, Panchatantra stories travelled beyond India and were translated into numerous languages, becoming part of the literary heritage of many cultures around the world.

One of the best-known Panchatantra tales is “The Foolish Lion and the Clever Rabbit.” The story illustrates how intelligence and presence of mind can overcome physical strength and arrogance.

The tale tells of a powerful lion who terrorised the animals of the forest by killing them indiscriminately. To protect themselves, the animals reached an agreement with the lion that one animal would be sent to him each day as his food. One day, the turn fell to a small rabbit. Rather than surrendering helplessly, the clever rabbit devised a plan to save himself and the other animals.

The rabbit deliberately arrived late and told the lion that another lion had stopped him on the way, claiming to be the true ruler of the forest. Enraged, the lion demanded to be taken to his rival. The rabbit led him to a deep well and pointed to the reflection of the lion in the water, convincing him that another lion was hiding inside.

Believing the reflection to be a rival, the foolish lion leapt into the well and met his end. The clever rabbit returned safely to the other animals, demonstrating that intelligence and strategic thinking can triumph over brute strength.

The moral of the story is that wisdom, intelligence, and presence of mind are often more powerful than physical strength. It also highlights the dangers of pride, anger, and impulsive action. The story remains popular among children and adults because its simple narrative conveys a timeless lesson about using intelligence to overcome seemingly impossible challenges.

The Panchatantra continues to hold an important place in Indian literature and cultural heritage. Its stories have been adapted into books, illustrations, theatre, animation, educational material, and numerous other forms. Their enduring popularity reflects the universal nature of the values they convey.
