2019 - 250th Session of Rajya Sabha | Commemorative Coin

The 8th commemorative coin for the year 2019 was released to celebrate the landmark of '250th Session of Rajya Sabha'. This marks the inaugural release of a Rs 250 denomination coin.

The Rajya Sabha, or Council of States, serves as the upper house in the bicameral Parliament of India. With a maximum membership of 245, 233 members are elected by the legislatures of states and union territories using single transferable votes through Open Ballot, while the President can appoint 12 members for their notable contributions to art, literature, science, and social services.

Members hold staggered terms of six years, with elections held annually. Almost a third of the 233 designates face election every two years, specifically in even-numbered years.

Unlike the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha is not subject to dissolution and meets in continuous sessions. However, the President can prorogue the Rajya Sabha, similar to the Lok Sabha.

The Vice President of India serves as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, presiding over its sessions. The Deputy Chairman, elected from among the house's members, manages day-to-day affairs in the absence of the Chairman. The Rajya Sabha held its inaugural sitting on 13 May 1952, convening in the eponymous chamber located in Parliament House, New Delhi.
