2022 - Shree Mahalakshmi Diwali | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Hyderabad, issued a silver souvenir token featuring Goddess Shree Mahalakshmi to mark the auspicious occasion of Diwali.

Goddess Shree Mahalakshmi is one of the most revered Hindu goddesses and is worshipped as the embodiment of wealth, prosperity, abundance, fortune, beauty, and auspiciousness. She is regarded as the divine consort of Lord Vishnu and represents the blessings of material and spiritual well-being.

Goddess Mahalakshmi holds a particularly important place in the celebrations of Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Lakshmi Puja, performed on the main day of Diwali in many parts of India, is dedicated to seeking her blessings for prosperity, happiness, peace, and success. Homes and businesses are traditionally cleaned and decorated with lamps, flowers, rangoli, and other festive decorations before the prayers are performed.

Mahalakshmi is commonly depicted seated or standing on a lotus, symbolising purity, beauty, and spiritual awakening. Gold coins flowing from her hands symbolise prosperity and abundance, while elephants associated with her imagery represent strength, dignity, and royal prosperity.

The lighting of diyas during Diwali has a special connection with the worship of Mahalakshmi. The illuminated homes are traditionally believed to welcome the Goddess and her blessings. Devotees offer flowers, fruits, sweets, lamps, and other offerings while praying for a prosperous and harmonious year ahead.

Diwali is also closely associated with Dhanteras, when purchasing gold, silver, jewellery, and other valuable items is considered auspicious. This tradition reinforces the festival's association with wealth and prosperity and reflects the longstanding cultural importance of precious metals in Indian society.
