2023 - Shri Krishna Janmashtami | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Mumbai, issued gold and silver souvenir tokens in 2023 to mark the auspicious occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami.

Shri Krishna Janmashtami is one of the most revered Hindu festivals, celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is observed on the Ashtami Tithi, the eighth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Shravana or Bhadrapada, depending on the regional calendar.

According to Hindu tradition, Lord Krishna was born at midnight in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva. His birth took place during the reign of the tyrannical King Kamsa, who had imprisoned his parents. To protect the newborn Krishna from Kamsa, Vasudeva carried him across the Yamuna River to Gokul, where he was raised by Nanda and Yashoda.

The festival is celebrated with great devotion across India and in many parts of the world. Devotees observe fasting, visit temples, sing devotional songs and participate in prayers and religious ceremonies. Temples are beautifully decorated, and the birth of Lord Krishna at midnight is commemorated with special rituals and the chanting of devotional hymns.

Janmashtami is also closely associated with Krishna's childhood in Gokul and Vrindavan, where stories of his playful nature, love for his devotees and fondness for butter have become an integral part of Indian cultural traditions. Celebrations such as Dahi Handi, particularly popular in Maharashtra, commemorate Krishna's childhood pastime of stealing butter with his friends.

Beyond its religious significance, Shri Krishna Janmashtami represents the triumph of righteousness over evil and reminds devotees of the values of love, compassion, devotion and dharma. The teachings of Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita continue to inspire millions of people and remain an enduring part of India's spiritual and cultural heritage.
