2004 - Unity In Diversity | Definitive Coin

The year 2004 marked the introduction of the definitive coin series featuring the theme "Unity in Diversity", symbolising India's cultural, linguistic, and regional harmony.

The "Unity in Diversity" theme adopted for this definitive coin series was represented by a central motif resembling a plus (+) symbol formed by four stylised human figures sharing a common centre. According to the official press release, the design symbolised "four heads sharing a common body", representing the unity of India's diverse cultures, languages, traditions, and people.

The ₹1 coin bearing this design was first released in 2004, marking the introduction of the Unity in Diversity series. The theme was subsequently extended to other denominations, although not all proposed coins were ultimately issued.

The 2004 ₹10 bi-metallic coin, originally intended for inclusion in a single-coin collector's pack by the India Government Mint, Kolkata, was never released in that format. The first ₹10 bi-metallic circulation coin was eventually issued in 2005, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of India's modern circulating coinage.

A 50 Paise coin was also designed as part of the Unity in Diversity series but was never minted for circulation. The ₹5 coin featuring this design was struck only in 2007, as the transition from cupro-nickel to ferritic stainless steel (FSS) for circulating coinage was underway. Once the decision to discontinue cupro-nickel coins due to rising production costs was implemented, the minting of the ₹5 Unity in Diversity coin came to an end.

Consequently, the 2007 ₹5 Unity in Diversity coin had a relatively short production run and is regarded as one of the scarcer definitive issues of modern Indian coinage. The Unity in Diversity design was discontinued after 2007, when it was gradually replaced by subsequent definitive coin series with new themes and revised specifications.
