President Releases ₹250 Coin on 250th Session of Rajya Sabha
A ₹250 commemorative coin and a postal stamp marking the historic 250th Session of the Rajya Sabha were released by the Hon’ble President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, in the presence of Vice President Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla, and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Shri Prahlad Joshi.
Addressing the landmark session, the Prime Minister said that the Rajya Sabha has made a significant contribution to the nation’s legislative history and has been witness to many historic moments. He noted that the vision of the Constitution’s framers in establishing a bicameral legislature has greatly strengthened India’s democratic foundations.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the Rajya Sabha represents India’s diversity and mirrors the country’s federal structure. Its continuity, without dissolution, makes it an eternal institution, he said, adding that it provides a platform for individuals outside electoral politics to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Emphasising its role in promoting cooperative federalism, he stated that the Rajya Sabha has consistently risen to the occasion in the nation’s interest. He cited the House’s important role in the passage of key legislations, including those related to GST, Triple Talaq, and Article 370.
Recalling the words of former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he noted that the Rajya Sabha must function as a vibrant and constructive chamber for national progress. He also paid tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar for his immense contributions to the Upper House and to India’s democratic journey.
The Prime Minister commended Members of Parliament who uphold parliamentary ethics and express their views with dignity while ensuring the smooth functioning of the House, noting that such conduct sets valuable benchmarks.
Reiterating the indispensable role of the Rajya Sabha in India’s democratic framework, he cautioned that the checks and balances vested in the Upper House must be exercised responsibly and not misused to obstruct the legislative process.
This commemorative coin marks the first-ever issuance of a ₹250 denomination in the history of Republic India coinage, minted by India Government Mint, Mumbai, adding a remarkable milestone to the nation’s numismatic heritage. The bookings are expected to open soon on the India Government Mint's website and will be updated in the current and upcoming bookings section.
