New Coin Series: 75th Year of Independence

The Government of India will be issuing the new definitive series on occasion of 75th Year of Independence with denominations of ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10, and ₹20. This initiative marks a significant milestone in honouring India's journey towards freedom and independence. The Ministry of Finance has issued the gazette notification on November 8, 2021.

The "Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav" encapsulates the progressive essence of India's socio-cultural, political, and economic identity. The official journey of "Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav" commenced on March 12, 2021, with a 75-week countdown leading up to the 75th anniversary of Independence. The culmination of this commemorative celebration is scheduled for August 15, 2022, marking a year-long reflection on India's journey towards freedom.

The metal composition of the ₹1 coin is Ferritic Stainless Steel, weighing 3.09 grams, and having a diameter of 20 mm. The ₹2 coin is made of Ferritic Stainless Steel, weighs 4.07 grams, and has a diameter of 23 mm, featuring 50 wider serrations on the edge. The ₹5 coin is composed of Nickel Brass, weighs 6.74 grams, and has a diameter of 25 mm. The ₹10 coin is a Bi-Metallic coin with Nickel Brass in the Outer Ring and Nickel Silver in the center, weighing 7.74 grams, and having a diameter of 27 mm, with 100 serrations on the edge. The ₹20 coin is also Bi-Metallic, with Nickel Silver in the Outer Ring and Nickel Brass in the center, weighing 8.54 grams and having a diameter of 27 mm. The ₹20 coin features a Dodecagon (12-edged polygon), while all others are circular.

The obverse of the coins shall feature the Lion Capitol of the Ashoka Pillar in the center, with the legend 'सत्यमेव जयते' inscribed below. On the left periphery, the word 'भारत' in Hindi and on the right periphery, the word 'INDIA' in English will be displayed.

The reverse side of the coins will feature the official logo of "आज़ादी का अमृत महोत्सव" at the center. Below the logo, the Rupee symbol "₹" and the denomination value in international numerals will be displayed. Along the top periphery of the coin, the text "75th Year of Independence" will be inscribed in English. The year of minting in international numerals will be positioned at the center of the left periphery of the coin.

The coins are classified as part of the definitive series rather than being designated as commemorative coins. The release of these coins is anticipated in the near future.
