2022 - 75th Year of Independence | Definitive Coin

This definitive coin series was released as a special coin series under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.

Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav was a nationwide initiative of the Government of India to commemorate 75 years of India's Independence and celebrate the country's remarkable journey of progress since 1947. The celebration honoured the sacrifices of the freedom fighters while recognising India's achievements in the fields of culture, economy, science, technology, governance, and social development. It was also dedicated to the people of India, whose contributions have shaped the nation's growth and who continue to play a vital role in realizing the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India).

Conceived as a people's movement, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav symbolised the progressive spirit of India's socio-cultural, political, and economic identity. The official celebrations commenced on March 12, 2021, marking a 75-week countdown to the 75 years of Independence on August 15, 2022. The commemorative programme continued beyond Independence Day, concluding after a year-long celebration that highlighted the nation's rich heritage, achievements, and aspirations for the future.

To mark this historic milestone, a new series of definitive circulation coins featuring the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav theme was introduced. Although the series was officially inaugurated in June 2022, the ₹2, ₹5, ₹10, and ₹20 coins were issued bearing the year 2021, reflecting the commencement of the nationwide celebrations. The ₹1 denomination entered circulation from 2023.

The series continued to be minted for several subsequent years, well beyond the conclusion of the official 75-week celebration. While inspired by the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative, these coins were issued as regular definitive circulation coins rather than as commemorative issues. Their continued production ensured that the theme remained a part of India's everyday circulating coinage, extending the legacy of the 75th anniversary of Independence beyond the commemorative period.

India has taken another significant step towards the possible introduction of polymer banknotes with Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited (BRBNMPL) issuing a Global Expression of Interest (EOI) on July, 17 2026 for the manufacture and supply of opacified polymer substrate sheets with advanced security features. The initiative is aimed at identifying experienced domestic and international manufacturers capable of producing high-security polymer substrates suitable for printing Indian banknotes. Mumbai Mint Opens Bookings for Rajendra Chola I Coin Sets

The India Government Mint, Mumbai, has opened the bookings for the ₹1000 commemorative coin issued to mark the 1000 Years of Naval Expedition of Emperor Rajendra Chola I . The bookings are open from August 26, 2025, and it is subject to limited availability. Earlier, on July 27, 2025, the Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, unveiled a ₹1000 commemorative coin during his visit to Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Ariyalur district.
