New Commemorative Coin: Shrimad Buddhisagar Surishwarji Maharajji
The Government of India will issue a ₹150 commemorative coin to mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Jain Acharya Shrimad Buddhisagar Surishwarji Maharajji. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on November 4, 2024, confirming this coin.
Acharya Shrimad Buddhisagar Surishwarji Maharaj was a revered Jain monk and spiritual leader known for his profound teachings and contributions to Jain philosophy. Born in the early 20th century, he dedicated his life to the promotion of non-violence, truth, and compassion, core principles of Jainism. Acharya Buddhisagar Surishwarji played a significant role in revitalizing Jain education and spiritual practices, emphasizing the importance of self-discipline and meditation. His sermons and writings inspired countless followers and encouraged them to lead a life of ethical values and spiritual growth. He is remembered for his commitment to social upliftment and harmony, leaving a lasting legacy within the Jain community and beyond.
The metal composition of the ₹150 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.
Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “150” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.
Reverse: This face of the coin shall bear the image of the Jain Acharya Shrimad Buddhisagar Surishwarji Maharajji in the centre of the coin. The inscription “जैन आचार्य श्रीमद् बुद्धिसागर सूरीश्वरजी महाराज जी की 150वीं जयंती” shall be written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery and the inscription “150th Birth Anniversary of Jain Acharya Shrimad Buddhisagar Surishwarji Maharajji” in English is depicted on the lower periphery of the coin. The years “1874” and “2024” in international numerals shall be flanked on left and right periphery of the coin.
