New Commemorative Coin: 150 Years of India Meteorological Department

The Government of India will issue a ₹150 commemorative coin and a postal stamp to celebrate the 150 Years of India Meteorological Department.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), will celebrate 150 years of service to the nation on January 15, 2025, marking its establishment in 1875. IMD is one of the earliest government institutions specifically created for systematic weather observation, numerical modeling, and forecasting weather and climate across the Indian subcontinent.

Over the decades, IMD has played a pivotal role in advancing meteorology as a modern physical science. Its contributions have significantly influenced the field through the dedicated efforts of its employees, including scientists, technologists, and administrators, who have been integral to IMD’s illustrious journey. This milestone highlights the department's unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence in meteorological research and services, shaping India’s preparedness for weather and climate challenges.

It has been reported that the Ministry of Finance has approved the issuance of a commemorative coin. However, it is essential to wait for the official gazette notification from the Ministry of Finance for detailed information about the coin.

It has been proposed to release a commemorative coin and a postal stamp on January 15, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The coin is reportedly minted by the India Government Mint, Mumbai. The possibility of this coin was first posted on this blog as early as February 2024.
