New Possible Commemorative Coin: India Meteorological Department
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is celebrating its 150 Years of Service to the Nation, spanning from January 15, 2024 to January 15, 2025.
There is speculation that the Government of India may issue a commemorative coin of ₹150 in 2024-2025 to mark this significant milestone.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) operates under the Ministry of Earth Sciences and serves as the principal agency for meteorological observations, weather forecasting, and seismology. Headquartered in Delhi, the IMD manages numerous observation stations across India and Antarctica, with regional offices in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Nagpur, Guwahati, and New Delhi.
Being one of the six Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres of the World Meteorological Organization, the IMD plays a crucial role in forecasting, naming, and issuing warnings for tropical cyclones in the Northern Indian Ocean region, covering the Malacca Straits, the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Persian Gulf.
Inaugurating the curtain-raiser event for the celebration on the Foundation Day, January 15, 2024, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, the Vice President, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, marked the significance of this milestone.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi also acknowledged the India Meteorological Department's exceptional service to the nation on January 15, 2024, stating, "Today we mark 150 years of the India Meteorological Department’s exceptional service to our nation. From pioneering weather forecasting to advancing climate research, IMD has been instrumental in safeguarding lives and enhancing our understanding of the environment."
The issuance of a commemorative coin is anticipated, pending confirmation through a gazette notification from the Ministry of Finance. While the IMD's 150th anniversary is a prominent event, there are several other possibilities for commemorative coins in the upcoming days.
