MoF issues Gazette Notification for 2550th Nirvan Mahotsav of Mahaveer Coin

The Government of India will issue a commemorative coin of ₹100 to mark the 2550th Nirvan Mahotsav of Bhagwan Mahaveer. The Ministry of Finance issued the gazette notification on February 23, 2024, confirming the coin.

The 2550th Nirvan Mahotsav of Bhagwan Shri Mahaveer occurred on November 13, 2023, coinciding with Kartik Amavasya. The inauguration event was originally planned for November 26, 2023, at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Delhi. However, it was postponed and is now rescheduled, possibly taking place on April 21, 2024, or earlier.

The nationwide celebration of the last Tirthankara of Jainism is jointly organized by the Bhagwan Mahaveer Nirvan Mahotsav Samiti and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

The metal composition of the ₹100 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “100” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of coin shall bear a prominent and detailed image of the Nalanda Pawapuri Jal Mandir which shall be featured at the centre. Below the image of the Jal Mandir, ‘पावापुरी निर्वाण भूमि’ shall be inscribed. In the left periphery of the coin, the inscription ‘भगवान महावीर 2550वाँ निर्वाण कल्याणक’ shall be written in Devanagari script and the inscription ‘Bhagwan Mahaveer 2550th Nirvan Kalyanak’ in English shall be depicted on the right periphery of the coin. The year “2023” shall be inscribed on the bottom periphery of the coin, flanked with two dots.

Earlier, Shri Manoj Tiwari, a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, officially announced the issuance of the commemorative coin during the Shamavani program held on October 2, 2023, at the historic Red Fort grounds in Delhi.

This will mark the issuance of the seventh or eight commemorative coin for the year 2024, a momentous occasion to pay tribute to the legacy of Bhagwan Mahaveer and his profound teachings.
