MoF issues Gazette Notification for Mohammed Rafi Coin

The Government of India will issue a ₹100 commemorative coin on the occasion of the 'Birth Centenary of Mohammed Rafi.' The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on February 12, 2025, confirming this coin.

Mohammed Rafi (24 December 1924 – 31 July 1980) was an iconic Indian playback singer, renowned for his versatile voice and ability to capture a wide range of emotions in his songs. He is celebrated as one of the greatest and most influential singers in the history of Indian music, leaving a lasting legacy with his timeless melodies.

The metal composition of the ₹100 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “100” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of coin shall bear the image of Mohammed Rafi in the centre of the coin. The inscription “मोहम्मद रफी की जन्म शताब्दी” shall be written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery and the inscription “Birth Centenary of Mohammed Rafi” in English is depicted on the lower periphery of the coin. The year “1924-2024” in international numeral shall be written below the image of Mohammed Rafi.

Earlier, commemorative coins were issued in honor of legendary singers, including renowned Ghazal artist Begum Akhtar in 2014 and the iconic Carnatic music maestro Dr. M.S. Subbulakshmi in 2017.

This commemorative coin is among the most anticipated releases, marking the Birth Centenary of Mohammed Rafi, which concluded on December 24, 2024. The coin is reportedly minted by the India Government Mint, Mumbai. This news was first posted on this blog on August 21, 2024.
