New Commemorative Coin: Birth Centenary of Mohammed Rafi

The Government of India will be issuing a ₹100 commemorative coin on the occasion of the 'Birth Centenary of Mohammed Rafi.'

Mohammed Rafi (24 December 1924 – 31 July 1980) was an iconic Indian playback singer, widely regarded as one of the most influential and legendary voices in the Indian subcontinent. Renowned for his versatility and vocal range, Rafi's repertoire spanned fast-paced tracks, patriotic anthems, melancholic melodies, deeply romantic tunes, qawwalis, ghazals, bhajans, and classical pieces. His exceptional ability to adapt his voice to match the persona and style of the actor performing on screen made him a favorite in the industry. Over his illustrious career, Rafi won six Filmfare Awards and a National Film Award. In 1967, the Government of India honored him with the prestigious Padma Shri award.'

It has been reported that the Ministry of Finance has approved the issuance of a commemorative coin honoring the legendary singer. However, it is essential to wait for the official gazette notification from the Ministry of Finance for confirmation and detailed information regarding the coin's release.

Last year, Union Minister Shri Piyush Goyal proposed that musical concerts be held on the 24th of every month throughout the coming year to mark the centenary of singer Mohammed Rafi. He also suggested that the birth centenary celebrations of the legendary Bollywood singer be held at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. He also said to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in this year’s centenary celebrations.
