Denomination Change Announced for Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab Coin

The Ministry of Finance reissued the gazette notification today, November 19, 2024, regarding the issuance of a commemorative coin for the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab, ahead of its release this week. The coin will now have a denomination of ₹125, instead of ₹100, as stated in the earlier notification issued on December 29, 2023.

The metal composition of the ₹125 coin remains the same as stated in the earlier notification, consisting of a Quaternary Alloy comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams, have a diameter of 44 mm, and feature 200 serrations along the edge. The revised description of the coin is as follows:

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “125” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of coin shall bear the portrait of Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab in the centre of the coin. The inscription “डॉ. हरेकृष्ण महताब की 125वीं जयंती” shall be written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery and the inscription “125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab” in English is depicted on the lower periphery of the coin. The year “2024” in international numeral shall be written below the portrait of Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab.

It’s worth noting that the earlier notification mentioned the year 2023, but it has now been corrected to 2024.

This release will mark the issuance of the 20th commemorative coin for 2024, setting a new record for the highest number of coins issued in a single year in the history of Republic India coinage. The previous record was set in 2023, with the issuance of 19 coins. In addition, several other commemorative coins are lined up for release. Stay tuned to this blog for the latest news and updates.
