New Commemorative Coin: Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab
The Government of India will issue a commemorative coin of ₹100 to mark the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on December 29, 2023, confirming this coin.
Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab (born Harekrushna Das, 21 November 1899 – 2 January 1987) was a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress, a distinguished figure in the Indian independence movement, and served as the Chief Minister of Odisha from 1946 to 1950 and again from 1956 to 1961. Widely recognized by the sobriquet "Utkal Keshari," Mahtab played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of Odisha during a pivotal period in the nation's history.
The metal composition of the ₹100 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.
Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “100” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.
Reverse: This face of coin shall bear the portrait of Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab in the centre of the coin. The inscription “डॉ. हरेकृष्ण महताब की 125वीं जयंती” shall be written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery and the inscription “125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab” in English is depicted on the lower periphery of the coin. The year “2023” in international numeral shall be written below the portrait of Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab.
