He played an instrumental role in the construction of the Hirakud Dam, one of India’s major multipurpose river valley projects, which contributed immensely to irrigation, flood control, and industrial development in the region. His leadership helped lay the foundation for Odisha’s progress in the decades that followed.
Beyond his political contributions, Dr. Mahtab was an accomplished writer, historian, and journalist. His intellectual pursuits earned him recognition as a distinguished literary figure, and he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983 for his contributions to Odia literature.
Dr. Mahtab also held several important positions at the national level. He served as the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry and was a member of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha at different points in his career. His vision extended beyond politics, as he worked to strengthen democratic institutions, promote regional culture, and improve the socio-economic conditions of the people of Odisha.
