Missing Issuance Years in Commemorative Coins

In a recent discussion among collectors, the absence of the year on the ₹90 commemorative coin issued for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has sparked considerable debate. However, this is not the first time a commemorative coin has been released without an issuance year. There are several precedents for this omission, highlighting a pattern in Republic India numismatics. One notable instance occurred in 2006, when a ₹100 and a ₹5 coin were issued in remembrance of Mahatma Basaveshwara . The inscriptions on these coins featured "महात्मा बसवेश्वर" and "भक्ति – कायक – दासोह – समता" in Devanagari script, along with "Mahatma Basaveshwara" in English. Despite their detailed inscriptions, these coins did not include the year of issuance. Kolkata Mint Opens Bookings for AKAM Coins Set

The India Government Mint, Kolkata has started accepting bookings for the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav coin series , featuring denominations of ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10, and ₹20. The booking period began on December 18, 2024, and is subject to limited availability. The Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav coins are available in Folder/Blister packages priced at ₹730. It is important to note that these sets contain UNC (Uncirculated) coins. Earlier, they were issued by the Mumbai Mint in Acrylic and Folder/Blister packages in September 2023. These are distinct from the circulation strikes issued by the Hyderabad Mint. These coins can be obtained either at the Mint Premises or through the  official website  of the India Government Mint. Karnataka Governor to Release Coins on Shri Parshvanath Bhagwan

The Governor of Karnataka, Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, along with Jainacharya Shri Jin Piyush Sagar Surishwarji, will release commemorative coins and postage stamps to celebrate the 2900th Janm Kalyanak and 2800th Nirvan Kalyanak of the 23rd Tirthankara, Shri Parshvanath Bhagwan, at Bhopalgarh, District Jodhpur, Rajasthan, on December 25, 2024. The event is being organized by the Shri Parshwanath Jinalaya Mahabalipuram Tirth Nyas and Shri Ostara Parshwanath Jain Shwetamber Murtipujak Trust. Shri Parshvanath Bhagwan, the 23rd Tirthankara in Jainism, holds a revered place in the faith's history. Sanjay Malhotra is the New RBI Governor for a three-year term

The central government appointed Shri Sanjay Malhotra as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a three-year term. Shri Malhotra, currently serving as the Secretary in the Department of Revenue, will succeed Shri Shaktikanta Das in the position, effective December 11, 2024. A notification from the Department of Personnel and Training, issued on December 9, 2024, confirmed his appointment, highlighting his distinguished career as an IAS officer from the 1990 batch (Rajasthan cadre). Shri Malhotra holds an electrical engineering degree from IIT Kanpur and a master's in public policy from Princeton University. Over his career, he has held pivotal roles, including Chairman and Managing Director of REC Limited (a Maharatna company) and Secretary in the Department of Financial Services. The Kuka Movement: The Story Behind the ₹100 and ₹5 Coins

The then Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram released the commemorative coin with the denominations of ₹100 and ₹5 marking 150 years of Kuka Movement on October 5, 2012, few knew that the coin was designed by Ludhiana's Mr. Jeevandeep Singh. The then Minister for Tourism and Culture, Smt. Ambika Soni, announced that an event related to the Kuka Movement would be included in the suggested list of anniversaries to be observed during the 2007-08 commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the First War of Independence and related events. The Indian Council of Historical Research vetted the list and identified the date of the Kuka Movement event as April 20, 1872. The suggested list was circulated to all State and Union Territory Governments, encouraging them to organize functions in collaboration with all sections of society. Kolkata Mint Opens Bookings for 75th Anniversary of Constitution Coin Sets

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, has commenced bookings for the ₹75 commemorative coin issued to mark the 75th Anniversary of Constitution . Bookings are open from today, December 3, 2024, and are available in limited quantities. Earlier, the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, along with Vice President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, released the commemorative coin on  November 26, 2024,  at the Central Hall, Samvidhan Sadan, New Delhi. The ₹75 coin is available in both Proof and UNC sets, packaged in Folder/Blister options. Proof sets with MDF/Wooden Box packaging are awaited, although it's uncertain if they will be issued. The Proof Set in Folder/Blister packaging is priced at ₹3,778, while the UNC Set is priced at ₹3,558. President Murmu Unveils ₹75 Coin on 75th Constitution Day

The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, along with Vice President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, unveiled the ₹75 commemorative coin and a postage stamp to mark the 75th Anniversary of Constitution  at the Central Hall of Samvidhān Sadan in New Delhi. The event was attended by Speaker Shri Om Birla, Union Ministers, Members of Parliament, and other dignitaries. The tagline for the year-long celebrations is “Humara Samvidhan, Humara Swabhiman”. In addition to the release of the commemorative coin and postage stamp, the event also featured the unveiling of two books titled “Making of the Constitution of India: A Glimpse” and “Making of the Constitution of India & Its Glorious Journey”.
