Beyond the Numbers: Portrait Variants in the Mahalanobis Coin

In 2018, the Government of India issued commemorative coins in denominations of ₹125 and ₹5 to mark the 125th Birth Anniversary of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis , a visionary statistician and the founder of the Indian Statistical Institute.  While the ₹125 coin was issued as a non-circulating commemorative, the ₹5 coin was released for general circulation.  However, despite being the most recent circulating commemorative issued to date, the ₹5 coin was rarely seen in everyday transactions. In recent times, collectors have observed and discussed two distinct varieties of this coin, despite both carrying the same core design. These are commonly referred to as the small portrait and large portrait versions. MoF issues Gazette Notification for Dr. M. S. Swaminathan Coin

The Government of India will issue a ₹100  commemorative coin  to mark the Birth Centenary of Prof. M. S. Swaminathan . The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on July 11, 2025, confirming this coin. Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, widely regarded as the Father of India’s Green Revolution, was a visionary agricultural scientist whose innovations in crop science helped make India self-sufficient in food production. His work uplifted millions of farmers and laid the foundation for sustainable agriculture. In recognition of his monumental contributions, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2024. The  metal composition  of the ₹100 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The Government of India will issue a ₹100 colored commemorative coin to mark the 10th Anniversary of Make in India . The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on July 11, 2025, confirming this coin. Make in India is an initiative launched by the Government of India to promote and support companies in developing, manufacturing, and assembling products within the country while encouraging dedicated investments in the manufacturing sector. The policy aims to foster a favorable investment climate, enhance modern infrastructure, and open new sectors to foreign capital, driving economic growth and self-reliance. The Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, unveiled the ₹125 commemorative coin  and postage stamp to mark the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on July 9, 2025, at Siri Fort Auditorium, August Kranti Marg, New Delhi, as part of the two-year commemoration being observed from July 6, 2025, to July 6, 2027. The Government of India will issue a ₹125 commemorative coin on the occasion of the ' 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee '. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on July 8, 2025, confirming this coin. Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was a prominent Indian politician, barrister, and academician who played a significant role in the country's political history. He served as the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta and later became the first Industry and Supply Minister of independent India. Dissatisfied with the policies of the Nehru government, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, which later evolved into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Dr. Mookerjee is also remembered for his strong stance on the integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India. The  metal composition  of the ₹125 coin will consist of Pure Silver (99.9%).
