PM Modi Releases ₹100 Coin on Bharat Ratna Dr. M.S. Swaminathan

The Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, released the ₹100 commemorative coin and postage stamp to mark the Birth Centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, the pioneering architect of India’s Green Revolution. He also unveiled a special centenary edition of Prof. M.S. Swaminathan’s book In Search of Biohappiness. The ceremony was held at the Bharat Ratna C. Subramaniam Auditorium in New Delhi on August 7, 2025.

The event was graced by Union Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Ms. Soumya Swaminathan, Chairperson of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, and other dignitaries.

To honour his legacy, the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) launched the M.S. Swaminathan Award for Food and Peace. The Prime Minister presented the inaugural award to the first recipient on the occasion. This international award recognises individuals from developing countries who have made outstanding contributions to improving food security and advancing climate justice, equity, and peace for vulnerable and marginalised communities through scientific research, policy development, grassroots engagement, or local capacity building.

Paying tribute to Professor M. S. Swaminathan, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi described him as a visionary whose contributions to science and food security continue to guide India’s policies. He praised Professor Swaminathan for transforming science into a tool of public service and inspiring generations through his lifelong commitment to the nation’s agricultural progress.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged National Handloom Day, highlighting the sector’s growth over the last decade and extending his greetings to all associated with it.

Reflecting on his personal association with Professor Swaminathan, Shri Modi recalled the scientist’s valuable guidance during the launch of Gujarat’s Soil Health Card Scheme. He also mentioned visiting the MSSRF centre in Tamil Nadu, releasing Swaminathan’s book in 2017, and seeking his insights during the 2018 inauguration of the IRRI Regional Centre in Varanasi.

Quoting Professor Swaminathan’s words, “Science is not just about discovery, but delivery,” the Prime Minister said the late scientist truly embodied this principle through his work with farmers and agricultural reforms. Describing him as a gem of Mother India, Shri Modi expressed pride in the Government's decision to confer the Bharat Ratna upon him.

This commemorative coin marks the 17th release of the year 2025, minted by the India Government Mint, Hyderabad. The bookings of Proof and UNC sets are expected to open soon on the India Government Mint’s website and will be updated under the current and upcoming bookings section.
