The year 2023 marked a historic moment in the Republic of India Coinage,
with a record-breaking issuance of 19 commemorative coins, including predicted themes such as India's G20 Presidency, International Year of Millets 2023, and the Birth Centenary of N.T. Rama Rao.
As we enter 2024, several potential themes exist for the release of
commemorative coins by the Government of India. However, given the
anticipated 18th Lok Sabha general election between April and May 2024,
there might be a reduced number of commemorative coins issued in 2024
compared to the previous year. It's important to highlight that the 'Centenary Year of Karnataka Bank' and the '125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab' have already been officially gazette notified by the Ministry of Finance.
Ayodhya Ram Mandir
The commemoration of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir aims to bring people together, foster unity, and celebrate the shared cultural and spiritual heritage associated with Lord Ram. It's scheduled to happen in a grand inauguration ceremony on January 22, 2024.
75th Year of Republic India
The commemoration of the 75th year of the Republic of India will be a momentous occasion for the nation. Various events and celebrations are likely to take place throughout the country, highlighting India's achievements, progress, and the values enshrined in the constitution.
2550th Niravana Mahotsav of Bhagwan Mahavir
Shri Manoj Tiwari, a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, officially announced the upcoming issuance of the ₹100
commemorative coin during the Shamavani program held on October 2, 2023. This release is anticipated soon.
Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati
The Government of India might issue a ₹200 commemorative coin on the occasion of the 200th Birth Anniversary of a renowned social reformer and the founder of the Arya Samaj, scheduled for celebration on February 12, 2024.
Birth Centenary of Kumar Gandharva
The year-long celebrations commenced with a two-day music concert at the National Centre for the Performing Arts on April 08, 2023. There is speculation that a ₹100 commemorative coin may be released to mark the birth centenary of the Hindustani classical music stalwart on April 08, 2024.
Srimad Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Goswami Prabhupada
In November 2023, UNESCO included the "150th Birth Anniversary of Srimad Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Goswami Prabhupada," a philosopher, social reformer, and eminent spiritual leader, in its list of anniversaries for celebration with which UNESCO could be associated in 2024-2025. There is speculation that a ₹150 commemorative coin may be issued, either on February 6, 2024, or in 2025.
350th Year of Chhatrapati Shivaji's Coronation
The Government of Maharashtra has planned year-long programs to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the warrior king's coronation, scheduled to run from June 6, 2023, to June 6, 2024. Additionally, there is speculation about the issuance of a ₹350 coin to mark the occasion.
Birth Centenary of the M. Karunanidhi
It has been reported that the Ministry of Finance has granted approval for the Government of Tamil Nadu's request to issue the commemorative coin.
Birth Centenary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee
The Birth Centenary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, one of India's most prominent political figures, is scheduled for December 25, 2024. A ₹100 coin was issued in 2018 during the celebrations of Good Governance Week.
Certainly, there might be unexpected commemorations taking place in 2024, just as there were surprises in 2023. However, some themes like the '125th Birth Anniversary of Sh. Alluri Sitaram Raju', 'Birth Centenary of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi', '150th Birth Anniversary of Shri V.O. Chidambaram Pillai', and the '400th Birth Anniversary of Lachit Borphukan' might also be issued, similar to the commemoration of '250th Birth Anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy' and '125 years of Ramakrishna Mission' which were issued in 2023 instead of 2022.
Instances like the 'Golden Jubilee of the Republic' and the recent 'Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji' commemorative coins, which never materialized, highlight the challenges arising from prolonged delays and the absence of additional information.
These are potential commemorative themes and are confirmed only after the issuance of a gazette notification from the Ministry of Finance.
