The 11th commemorative coin of 2023 was released to celebrate the Centennial Birth Year of Shri Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao popularly known as NTR.

Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, fondly known as NTR, remains one of the most iconic and influential figures in the cultural and political history of Andhra Pradesh and India. Born on 28 May 1923 in Nimmakuru, a small village in Krishna district, NTR’s life was a remarkable journey marked by artistic brilliance, deep compassion for people, and a transformative political vision. Rising from modest beginnings, he went on to redefine cinema, reshape regional identity, and rewrite the political landscape through his charisma, dedication, and unwavering commitment to public service.

NTR’s illustrious film career began in the early 1950s, eventually spanning over three decades and more than 300 films. His commanding screen presence, expressive acting, and ability to embody powerful characters made him a household name. He portrayed mythological roles with unmatched conviction, bringing to life deities such as Lord Rama, Krishna, and Karna in ways that deeply resonated with audiences. His portrayal of these divine characters was not merely performance—it became a cultural experience that reinforced his place in the hearts of millions. At the same time, he excelled in social dramas, championing themes of justice, equality, and compassion. Films like Pathala Bhairavi, Mayabazar, Dana Veera Soora Karna, and Nartanasala remain timeless classics, celebrated for their craftsmanship and NTR’s magnetic presence.

His transition from cinema to politics was equally extraordinary. Witnessing the needs and aspirations of the common people, NTR founded the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982 with the promise of restoring Telugu pride, dignity, and self-respect. His message struck a powerful chord with the masses, leading to an unprecedented political wave. Within a year of forming the party, NTR won a sweeping victory in the 1983 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections and became the Chief Minister of the state. His entry into politics brought a new style of leadership grounded in accessibility, integrity, and a direct connection with people.

As Chief Minister, NTR launched several innovative welfare schemes that left a lasting impact on the state. His ₹2 per kilogram rice scheme, emphasis on rural development, protection of women’s rights, promotion of decentralized governance, and administrative reforms created a governance model that earned admiration across the country. He gave special importance to marginalized communities, empowering them through social initiatives and inclusive policies. His administrative approach reflected the values he often depicted on screen—justice, responsibility, and care for the weaker sections of society.

NTR’s personal discipline, simplicity, and deep faith in Telugu culture were hallmarks of his life. He travelled extensively across the state during his campaigns, often choosing unconventional methods such as the iconic “Chaitanya Ratham” to connect directly with people. His rapport with the masses was unparalleled; he was not just a leader but a cultural symbol representing aspiration, pride, and empowerment.

Even after facing political challenges and setbacks, NTR remained an enduring figure of respect. His passing on 18 January 1996 marked the end of an era, but his legacy continues to inspire generations. He is remembered not only as one of India’s most beloved actors but also as a statesman who reshaped the identity and destiny of Andhra Pradesh.
