2023 - 125 Years of Ramakrishna Mission | Commemorative Coin

The 18th commemorative coin of 2023 was released to celebrate the 125 Years of Ramakrishna Mission.

The Ramakrishna Mission is one of India’s most respected spiritual and humanitarian organizations, founded in 1897 by Swami Vivekananda as a tribute to his revered guru, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Rooted in the ideals of universal harmony, selfless service, spiritual realization, and the upliftment of humanity, the Mission has played a transformative role in shaping modern India’s moral and social fabric. Its guiding philosophy emphasizes that true religion is expressed not only through devotion and meditation but also through compassionate action and service to those in need.

At the heart of the Ramakrishna Movement stands Belur Math, the global headquarters of both the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission. Located on the banks of the Ganga in Howrah near Kolkata, Belur Math was designed by Swami Vivekananda himself as a symbol of universality, blending architectural elements inspired by Hindu, Christian, and Islamic traditions. It reflects the Mission’s core message—harmony of religions and unity of mankind. Belur Math serves as a serene spiritual centre, a place of pilgrimage for millions, and the administrative hub from which the Mission’s extensive activities are organized.

The Ramakrishna Mission follows the motto, “Atmano mokshartham jagat hitaya cha”—For one’s own liberation and for the welfare of the world. Guided by this ideal, the Mission has developed an expansive network of schools, colleges, hospitals, rural development programmes, tribal welfare initiatives, orphanages, libraries, and centres for value-based education. Its humanitarian work spans disaster relief, healthcare, women’s empowerment, vocational training, and support for marginalized communities. The Mission’s services are rendered without distinction of caste, creed, religion, or nationality, making it a shining example of selfless action.

The monastic wing, the Ramakrishna Math, trains monks inspired by the principles of renunciation, purity, discipline, and spiritual practice. These monks, along with dedicated lay volunteers, form the backbone of the Mission’s activities, integrating spiritual wisdom with social responsibility. Their work reflects the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, who emphasized the realization of God through sincerity, simplicity, and universal love, and Swami Vivekananda, who championed the idea that service to man is service to God.

Belur Math also stands as a cultural and educational centre, preserving the heritage of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda tradition through publications, lectures, scriptural studies, and spiritual retreats. Its serene environment and daily worship draw seekers from across the world, offering a space for reflection, peace, and inner growth.

The Ramakrishna Mission’s global influence continues to expand, with centres in many countries engaged in spiritual teaching, cultural exchange, and social service. Through its balanced blend of spiritual depth and practical action, it remains a living embodiment of the ideals of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda, inspiring countless individuals to lead lives grounded in compassion, truth, and selfless service.
