2023 - International Year of Millets | Commemorative Coin

The third commemorative coin for the year 2023 was released to mark the 'International Year of Millets 2023'.

Millets have been an integral part of our diet for centuries. In addition to a plethora of health benefits, millets are also good for the environment with low water & input requirement.

The United Nations General Assembly at its 75th session in March 2021 declared 2023 the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023). FAO is the lead agency for celebrating the Year in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders. Millets can grow on arid lands with minimal inputs and are resilient to changes in climate. They are therefore an ideal solution for countries to increase self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imported cereal grains.

Based on India’s proposal, the year 2023 was declared as the International Year of Millets (IYM) by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Also, in line with the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision to make the celebrations of IYM 2023 a ‘people’s movement’ and position India as the ‘global hub for millets’, all central government ministries/departments, states/UTs, farmers, start-ups, exporters, retail businesses and other stakeholders, are being engaged to promote and spread awareness about the benefits of millets (Shree Anna) for the cultivator, consumer and climate. The organization of Global Millets (Shree Anna) Conference in India is an important programme in this context.  

The two-day global conference will have sessions on all important issues related to millets (Shree Anna) like promotion and awareness of millets among producers, consumers and other stakeholders; millets’ value chain development; health and nutritional aspects of millets; market linkages; research and development etc. The conference will be attended by Agriculture Ministers of various countries, international scientists, nutritionists, health experts, start-up leaders and other stakeholders.

Kolkata Mint Opens Bookings for Jain Acharya Vidyasagar Coins

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, has commenced bookings for the ₹100  commemorative coin  issued to mark the first Samadhi Divas of  Sant Shiromani Digambar Jainacharya Vidyasagar Mahamuniraj . The bookings are open from March 18, 2025, and it is subject to limited availability. The ₹100 coin is currently issued only in the Proof Set, packaged in a Folder or Blister option. Additionally, the UNC Set with a Folder or Blister option and the Proof Set with an MDF or Wooden Box may be issued later.  Earlier, the Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, released the ₹100 commemorative coin during his visit to Chandragiri, Dongargarh, Chhattisgarh, on February 6, 2025. The ₹100 coin, included in the Proof Set and available in Folder/Blister packaging, is priced at ₹3,698. Shri Amit Shah Releases Shrimad Buddhisagar Surishwarji's Coin

The Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, released a ₹150 commemorative coin to mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Shrimad Buddhisagar Surishwarji Maharaj at Auda Auditorium, Shela, Ahmedabad, on March 9, 2025. The event was held in the esteemed presence of 97-year-old Acharya Bhagwant Shrimad Manohar Kirti Sagar Surishwarji Maharaj and 90-year-old Acharya Bhagwant Shrimad Padma Sagar Surishwarji Maharaj. The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Bhupendra Patel accompanied Shri Amit Shah during the ceremony.
