New Commemorative Coin: Platinum Jubilee of IIT Kharagpur
The Government of India will issue a ₹75 commemorative coin to mark the Platinum Jubilee of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on August 12, 2025, confirming this coin.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) is the first and oldest IIT in India, established in 1951 in Kharagpur, West Bengal. Renowned for its academic excellence, multidisciplinary programs, and pioneering research, the institute has produced generations of leaders, innovators, and scholars who have made significant contributions worldwide. Spanning over 2,000 acres, its campus is among the largest in the country, offering world-class facilities and a vibrant student life. IIT Kharagpur continues to uphold its legacy of shaping minds, fostering innovation, and serving as a hub for technological and societal advancement.
The metal composition of the ₹75 coin will consist of Pure Silver (99.9%). The coin will weigh 40 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.
Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “75” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.
Reverse: This face of the coin shall bear the logo of “Platinum Jubilee Celebration of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur”. The inscription “भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान, खड़गपुर” shall be written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery of the coin and the inscription “Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur” in English shall be written on the lower periphery of the coin. The year “2025” shall be written in international numerals on the lower side of the design. Above it, the text “प्लैटिनम जयंती” shall be written in Devanagari script, and “Platinum Jubilee” shall be placed below the Devanagari script.
