The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) stands as one of India’s premier institutions of higher learning, known for its academic excellence, cutting-edge research, and legacy of producing leaders across diverse fields. Established in 1951, it holds the distinction of being the first IIT in the country, born out of the vision to promote technical education and drive India’s post-independence industrial and scientific growth. Located in the historic town of Kharagpur, West Bengal, the sprawling campus covers over 2,000 acres, making it one of the largest in India. Its infrastructure blends modern facilities with the charm of a vibrant academic environment, offering students state-of-the-art laboratories, libraries, and research centers alongside hostels, sports complexes, and cultural spaces.

IIT Kharagpur offers a wide spectrum of programs in engineering, technology, sciences, management, law, architecture, and humanities, making it one of the most multidisciplinary IITs in the country. The institution’s emphasis on innovation and research is reflected in its collaborations with global universities, industries, and research bodies, enabling students and faculty to engage in projects of international relevance. The campus culture is dynamic, with numerous student-led societies, technical festivals like Kshitij, cultural events such as Spring Fest, and entrepreneurial initiatives that encourage creativity and leadership.

Over the decades, IIT Kharagpur has built a strong alumni network that includes influential scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and thought leaders who have contributed significantly both in India and abroad. Its graduates are recognized for their strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability, qualities that are fostered through a rigorous curriculum and experiential learning opportunities. The institute also houses several centers of excellence, including those focused on sustainable energy, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing, reinforcing its role as a hub of innovation.

On August 18, 2025, IIT Kharagpur will celebrate its Platinum Jubilee, marking 75 years of academic leadership, innovation, and service to the nation. The Institute has decided on a two-year-long celebration starting in August 2025 and concluding in August 2027. With a legacy of over seven decades, it continues to push the boundaries of knowledge while staying committed to nurturing talent that can meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. In many ways, IIT Kharagpur is not just an academic institution but a living ecosystem where ideas are born, nurtured, and transformed into impactful realities.
