2015 - Mahatma Gandhi's Return from South Africa | Commemorative Coin

The 3rd commemorative coin of 2015 was released to mark the Centenary Commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi’s Return from South Africa.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is a significant national event that celebrates the enduring bond between India and its global diaspora, recognizing the achievements, contributions and emotional connection that overseas Indians maintain with their motherland. Observed every year on 9 January, the day marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India in 1915—a symbolic moment that reflects the transformative role the Indian diaspora has played not only abroad but also in shaping India’s modern history. The observance of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas began in 2003, following the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on the Indian Diaspora, with the aim of strengthening links with people of Indian origin and acknowledging their role in India’s development across various sectors.

Over the years, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas has evolved into a vibrant platform that brings together Indian-origin individuals from across the world—professionals, entrepreneurs, students, cultural ambassadors and community leaders—to engage in dialogue with policymakers, industry experts and citizens. The event typically features thematic sessions, cultural programmes, interactive discussions and the presentation of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, the highest recognition conferred upon overseas Indians for their exceptional contributions in various fields. Through these interactions, the government seeks to highlight opportunities for partnership in sectors such as technology, healthcare, education, innovation and investment, reinforcing the message that the diaspora is a vital part of India’s growth story.

One of the key purposes of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is to celebrate the diversity and dynamism of the Indian diaspora, which today spans more than 100 countries and constitutes one of the largest expatriate communities in the world. Their success stories—whether in business, academics, public service, science, arts or community welfare—serve as a source of pride for India and reflect the global impact of Indian talent. At the same time, the event acknowledges the challenges faced by overseas Indians and provides a forum for addressing policy concerns related to consular services, investment facilitation, cultural preservation and community support.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas also reinforces the emotional and cultural connection that binds the diaspora to India. Through exhibitions, performances and interactions with leaders, participants reconnect with their heritage, exchange ideas and explore opportunities to contribute to India’s development. The event fosters a sense of belonging and encourages younger generations of the diaspora to understand their roots and engage more deeply with the country.

Over time, the format of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas has been refined to make it more impactful. Since 2015, it has been celebrated every two years, allowing for broader participation and more meaningful planning. Each edition is hosted by a different state, highlighting India’s regional diversity and showcasing local culture, industries and opportunities. This decentralized approach not only benefits the host state but also enables participants from around the world to experience India’s varied cultural and economic landscape.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas stands as a testament to India’s respect and appreciation for its diaspora—a community that has preserved its cultural identity while excelling globally. By bringing them closer to the country’s progress and aspirations, the event symbolizes India’s commitment to nurturing a strong, collaborative and mutually enriching relationship with its global family.
