2015 - Mahatma Gandhi's Return from South Africa | Commemorative Coin

The 3rd commemorative coin for the year 2015 was released to mark the Centenary Commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi’s Return from South Africa. This marked the historic occasion of the third consecutive day featuring the release of commemorative coins in the history of the Republic of India.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (English: Non-resident Indian Day) is observed in India on January 9 each year to acknowledge and celebrate the significant contributions made by the overseas Indian community towards the development of the country. The day holds historical significance as it marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Bombay on January 9, 1915. Instituted in 2003, this event is sponsored by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs of the Government of India, along with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region of India.

Annually, from January 7 to 9, a celebratory event takes place in an Indian city, providing a platform for discussions on matters concerning the Indian Diaspora. This event also features the presentation of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards. The 13th edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, held from January 7-9, 2015, had the theme centered around the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi's return to India from South Africa. Notably, it was the first time that Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was hosted in Gujarat, with Gandhi's return on January 9, 1915, being a pivotal part of the theme.
