2016 - Allahabad High Court | Commemorative Coin

The 4th commemorative coin of 2016 was released to mark the 150th Anniversary of Allahabad High Court. This also marked the first instance of the Mumbai Mint initiating coin bookings prior to the official release function.

The Allahabad High Court stands as one of India’s oldest and most prestigious judicial institutions, embodying a long legacy of legal evolution, constitutional growth, and public service. Established in 1866 during the British era as the High Court of Judicature for the North-Western Provinces, it later came to be known as the Allahabad High Court. Over the decades, this institution has played a pivotal role in shaping Indian jurisprudence and safeguarding fundamental rights, often setting legal precedents that have influenced national discourse. After the formation of the state of Uttar Pradesh, the court became its highest judicial body, eventually expanding its reach with the creation of the Lucknow Bench in 1948 to better serve the vast population of the region.

The court’s illustrious history includes contributions from some of the most distinguished legal minds of India, many of whom went on to become national leaders, constitutional experts, and chief justices. The Allahabad High Court is remembered for landmark judgments that strengthened civil liberties and upheld the values of justice and equality. One of its most historically significant decisions was the 1975 judgment disqualifying then–Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on charges of electoral malpractice, an event that altered the course of Indian politics and highlighted the judiciary’s power to hold even the highest offices accountable. Through such defining moments, the court established itself as a guardian of democratic principles and the rule of law.

Architecturally, the court’s main building in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) stands as an impressive example of colonial-era design, blending classical inspiration with functional planning. Beyond its symbolic presence, the institution continues to modernize, embracing digital reforms, e-filing systems, and technology-driven processes to enhance accessibility and transparency. With its enduring commitment to justice, the Allahabad High Court remains a cornerstone of India’s judicial framework, reflecting both historical depth and a forward-looking vision. Its legacy continues to inspire trust and confidence among millions, reaffirming its role as a sentinel of the Constitution and a beacon of judicial integrity.
