2016 - Shri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu | Commemorative Coin

The 8th commemorative coin for the year 2016 was released as part of year long celebration of 500 years of return of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to Vrindavan.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, born in Nabadwip, Bengal, in 1486, was a revered saint and the proponent of the Gaudiya Vaishnavism tradition. A key figure in the Bhakti movement, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is considered an incarnation of Lord Krishna by his followers.

From an early age, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu displayed a deep inclination towards spirituality. Renouncing worldly pursuits, he embarked on a profound spiritual journey, spreading the message of love and devotion (bhakti) to God. His teachings emphasized the chanting of the holy names of the divine, particularly the Hare Krishna mantra.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's influence extended beyond religious boundaries, drawing people from various walks of life to his philosophy of devotion. His notable disciples, the six Goswamis of Vrindavan, played a crucial role in systematizing and spreading his teachings.

Throughout his life, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu engaged in congregational chanting (sankirtan) of the holy names, attracting a dedicated following. His travels took him to various pilgrimage sites in India, spreading the essence of devotion and divine love.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's legacy is preserved through the Chaitanya Charitamrita, a biographical work that details his life and teachings. His impact on the spiritual landscape is profound, and his followers, known as Gaudiya Vaishnavas, continue to revere and propagate his teachings, fostering a deep sense of devotion to Lord Krishna. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's contributions have left an enduring mark on the Bhakti movement, inspiring countless individuals in their spiritual journeys.
