2017 - Shrimad Rajchandra | Commemorative Coin
The first commemorative coin of 2017 was released to mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Shrimad Rajchandra.
Shrimad Rajchandra was a revered Jain philosopher, poet, and spiritual luminary whose life and teachings left an enduring mark on Indian spiritual thought. Born on 9 November 1867 in Vavania, Gujarat, he displayed extraordinary intellectual and spiritual abilities from a very young age. By the age of seven, he had mastered mental arithmetic feats that astonished scholars and laypeople alike, earning him recognition as a child prodigy. Yet, beyond these remarkable talents, it was his deep spiritual inclination that ultimately shaped his legacy.
Rajchandra’s life took a transformative turn at the age of twenty-three when he experienced Keval Jnana Nu Anubhav, an intense moment of self-realisation that cemented his commitment to the pursuit of truth, non-violence, and inner purification. Though he lived only thirty-three years, his writings—including letters, articles, and the profound poetic composition Atma Siddhi Shastra—became cornerstones of modern Jain spiritual literature. Atma Siddhi, in particular, holds a distinguished place for its clear, logical exposition of the nature of the soul and the path to liberation.
One of the most significant aspects of Shrimad Rajchandra’s legacy is his spiritual influence on Mahatma Gandhi. Their correspondence and interactions during the early 1890s deeply shaped Gandhi’s understanding of truth, non-violence, and the practice of self-discipline. Gandhi would later describe Rajchandra as his “guide and refuge” in seeking moral clarity. The values that Rajchandra embodied—compassion, truth, humility, and Ahimsa—would go on to play a central role in Gandhi’s philosophy and India’s freedom movement.
Rajchandra’s approach to spirituality was marked by simplicity and introspection. He advocated for self-awareness, moral conduct, and devotion as essential elements of spiritual progress. Rather than relying on elaborate rituals or dogma, he emphasised direct inner experience as the true path to liberation. His teachings appealed not only to Jain followers but also to seekers across traditions who resonated with his universal message of inner transformation.
After his passing on 9 April 1901, his legacy continued to grow through disciples, institutions, and publications dedicated to preserving and spreading his message. Today, Shrimad Rajchandra is honoured as one of the most influential Jain thinkers of the modern era—a saint, philosopher, and guide whose life continues to inspire individuals striving for spiritual clarity and ethical living. His contributions remain a timeless reminder of the power of introspection, compassion, and unwavering commitment to truth.
