Is the Rs 2000 Banknote Being Phased Out or Banned?

Image
Recently, there have been reports and rumors circulating about the potential demonetization or banning of the Rs 2,000 high-denomination banknote. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has ceased printing Rs 2,000 banknotes and is gradually withdrawing them from circulation. Consequently, once deposited into banks, the Rs 2,000 banknotes are expected to have limited circulation, particularly in ATMs. Although the highest-value currency remains legal tender, it is anticipated to be phased out gradually. Banks are in the process of re-calibrating ATMs to substitute high-value Rs 2,000 notes with Rs 500 notes. While there is no official confirmation from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or other authorities, this adjustment is speculated to be part of the central bank's strategy to monitor the total amount of high-value currency in circulation. Contrary to social-networking messages spreading rumors, the government has officially clarified that no such move is being considered by the RBI. Th...

New One Rupee Currency Notes Coming Soon in 2020

Image
The Government of India is now preparing to release a fresh series of One Rupee denomination currency notes in 2020 with several noticeable design changes, although the one rupee notes were reintroduced in 2015 and printed in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The One Rupee note is unique because, unlike all other denominations issued by the Reserve Bank of India, it is printed and issued directly by the Ministry of Finance. This makes it the only currency note in India that does not carry the signature of the RBI Governor but instead bears the signature of the Finance Secretory. The obverse side of the new One Rupee note will feature the words “भारत सरकार” above “Government of India,” along with the bilingual signature of Shri Atanu Chakraborty, Secretary, Ministry of Finance. It will also include a replica of the One Rupee coin displaying the ‘₹’ symbol and the year 2020, along with the national motto ‘सत्यमेव जयते’. The numbering panel will carry a capital inset letter ‘L’, and the nu...
